Mess in Canada

What a free for all. I don't know if any of my American friends have been following the news in Canada, but we just narrowly escaped a coup d'etat..at least for now.. by the three Opposition parties against the newly elected minority Conservative government.

The CP issued a Financial Statement last week that promised cutbacks in government, including MP's perks and budgets, and also this explosive clause: the elimination of tax funding to all federal parties. Currently, each federal party receives $1.95  per vote from tax money, virtually eliminating their need to fund raise. The CP is the only party who works heavily for voluntary grassroots contributions, so the three Opposition Parties - the Liberals, the NDP (socialists) and the Bloc Quebecois (a party committed to the separation of Quebec from Canada) - went ballistic.

They formed a Coalition to replace the current Government, promising to spend billions on...hmmm...whatever...with a large payoff to Quebec in order to retain the support of the Bloc, who cares about nothing except Quebec. In fact, Duceppe, the leader of the Bloc, and one of his colleagues, that old separatiste bigot, Jacques Parizeau , gloated that this was indeed a moment to celebrate, as this Coalition would weaken Canada, and benefit the separatist movement in Quebec.

Shaking your head yet?

Canadian politics...thanks to the Liberals and Trudeau, this country has devolved into a bad French joke.

Where is Jerry Lewis when you need him?

Lessons to be learned:

Never officially or legally recognize any language other than the one spoken by the majority of people

Never assign territory for a special linguistic/cultural group

Never allow that group  to form a federal party representing solely their interests at the expense of the rest of the country

Never, ever, allow  liberals to rule your country for longer than..oh...10 seconds

I disagree. "Liberals", as they are mistakenly labeled, should never rule a country for that long.

There will be a separatist movement in the US Southwest; the demographics are compelling.  There's probably not much anyone can do about it.  I think overall, Canadians are extremely pleased with the path that the country has taken, excepting for the situation in Afghanistan, of course, and that is viewed as a US inspired debacle.  Your country is admired around the world for its tolerance and its willingness to put up with the evil empire to the south.   And we need you more than ever to come down with those Canadian $$ and spend, spend, spend, because, frankly, we're broke.

Quebec is a perfect example when a people aren't conquered completely. The only option now is either forced assimilation and deportation or independence. If I were Canadian I would not hesitate a second to let it go on its own. It would collapse on its own weight and backward leadership. Then I would offer citizenship only if they Anglo-ize themselves or leave for some place else.

But then I prefer the old solutions to history's turns rather than the fanciful thinking that runs universities, governments, and think tanks. But what else is expected from a gun loving, God fearing Yankee?

If you did not have a parliamentary proportional representation system then Quebec would not be a problem. If you had majority wins then the multiple parties would quickly collapse into two, like in the U.S. Less peoples' specific interests would be represented but more of the compromising would be done before the election, and it would avoid messes like this one that parliamentary systems often have (see Italy) where parties form coalitions and lots of instability results.

As for Quebec, it's fine for them to have their own language. Language is not necessary to keep a country together - see Switzerland and China (cantonese and mandarin). I live in California and everyone gets along fine with all the immigrants we have. However, it stops at language. Any requests by Quebecois for greater autonomy should be viewed as secessionism and not tolerated.

ElDuderinoCA: There are lots of languages spoken in homes and communities in Canada, but none are "official", and none are required as necessary to getting a govenment job. Except French. Canada is officially bilingual, as you know, with Quebec unilingual in French only, and having laws against advertising in English. It's bloody ridiculous what Canadians put up with for an 18% minority. the huge costs of publishing everything in English and French, including cereal boxes, the cost of offering every government service in both languages, even in Bumtoot, Alberta where more people speak Nunavit and no one speaks French; the idiot list goes on and on. And all Quebec does is posture and scream  "racism" if any of this is contested. Those in Quebec who believe in Canada should leave Quebec, the rest who promote "sovereignty" and secession should secede and get done with it. But they won;t, because of the wonderful cash flow coming from the Canadian taxpayers. And it all started with recognizing French as an "official language".

Sorry, I'm ranting!  :P

oh yes, iggy,  Rae is a Trojan Horse in the Liberal party. Can you imagine he and Jack Layton with their hands on the Canadian economy??!!  Buh-bye.

Sorry Cat.  We, in the USA, got jealous that Canada had a bigger scandal than us so we got our Chicago folks to work up an even larger one down here.

I am so surprised that a politician last named 'jackson' might be involved in bribery and/or extortion.  /sarc off

Politicians make me want to puke somedays.

Now, back to the Canadian mess:

Does this timeline sound about right?  I need to work Booby Rae and Power Corp. in here somewhere.  Suggestions?

1. Harper gets wind of the Lib/NDP/Bloc coalition.

2. Harper puts poison pill in the fiscal update ($1.95/vote).

3. Leftie/Separatist Coalition comes out of the closet and screams blue murder.

4. Harper retracts the poison pill.

5. Coalition still screaming and tries to grab power. Why?

6. Voters see this as a pure power grab.

7. Results - voters VERY angry with Libs/NDP/Bloc amd polls (and Quebec election) show it

8. CPC WAY up in the polls.

It has occurred to me that if you folks give Quebec the boot out of Confederation that the balance of power might be restored in Canada and that absolute corrosive influence of seperatism would be eliminated from the political discourse.  Plus you could save tons of money on bilingual signs and save a few trees to boot.  Course that might make the victim industry pissed but no more than the "Translator Union".

youniversl - I agree that there could be a separatist movement in the US Southwest.  Oh yes, I don't particularly see anything to be admired about tolerance of evil, and if you think that The States is evil, I invite you to feel free to move to any other country of your choosing.
